Description of Chartport
ChartPort is a suite of programs and utilities that facilitates
access of scanned patient documents by NextGen EMR. The document scanning is
performed with PaperPort, a low priced program from ScanSoft that
interfaces with many types of scanners and digital cameras. PaperPort provides
impressive image editing, manipulation and annotation capabilities and is an
excellent front end for a document management system. The PaperPort program
also acts as a printer allowing reports to be directly entered from any program
that has a print command. The ChartPort utilities provide the link between
PaperPort and NextGen EMR.
The process of adding a scanned document to a patients record
begins from within a
NextGen scanning template. A button on the template opens
PaperPort to the patient folder, creating it if necessary. The user
scans one or many documents belonging to the patient, dragging each one to the
NextGen link at the bottom the PaperPort program. The user is
prompted to enter a description and a date for each document, and the
document information is entered into the NextGen EMR database. Before an entry
is made into the NextGen database, the users NextGen credentials are verified.
The data entered into the NextGen database can be viewed within
NextGen by placing a datagrid control onto one or more templates. The datagrid
shows only documents that belong to the current patient and provides basic
information about the document such as the date scanned, the date of the
document, a brief description, and the file location on the system. The
template can be programmed to allow selection of the document in the datagrid,
and with the push of a button the document can be viewed in its viewer or sent
to a printer.

The licensing for ChartPort is on a per provider basis meaning
that any number of copies of the ChartPort software may be used by the named
provider and the providers staff even if the provider has multiple offices.
Note: A valid ScanSoft Paperport license is required for each computer that has
PaperPort loaded on it. PaperPort is required only for document scanning and is
not necessary for viewing the scanned documents.
